Transport staff deserve heartfelt praise

MICHAEL O’ Leary’s comments about Dublin Airport’s closure for four hours on December 23 were unnecessary and an attempt to have a go at the airport authority.
Fair play to Siobhan Moore from the DAA for her realistic and mature response. Dublin remained open in conditions that closed many of Europe’s major airports. Staff worked around the clock and the DAA even considered operating flights on Christmas Day to ensure people got home.
It is only right that we give credit to public transport operators. Conditions have been unprecedented. While travelling on the No 25 from Dublin city centre last Wednesday I came to realise the massive responsibility bus drivers carry in terrible weather. Dublin Bus has managed to keep services going in car-unfriendly conditions. The Luas has been a godsend. Let’s be realistic, the snow is a problem. But no matter where you are in the world, weather like this slows things down. We have learned many lessons from last year and we will learn more this year.
