Top man never forgot his roots

Dermot was a real man Progress in queen's visit Queen can go to The Pale Dunphy is legendary Black broke law in US Egos got us into trouble What's in a name? Solicitors hard hit too

Sir -- It was with great sadness and regret that I read of the untimely death of Dermot Earley last week. He was a true gentleman and a distinguished ambassador for Ireland on the Defence Forces scene and the sporting scene.

I had the privilege of playing U-16 football with Dermot on a Ballyhaunis team in 1962/63 and was amazed at his strength, ability and footballing skills.

The next time I met him was around the late Sixties, when he was interviewing candidates for a temporary teaching job for his dad, who had taken ill and who was principal of Gorthaganny NS.
