Tongue-tied

• 'Language Please' (Letters, July 18) made some sweeping statements about language learning and fluency, namely that most people in the world are fluent in numerous languages and that it is the norm rather than the exception to be multilingual.

Perhaps, as the author lives in Luxembourg, they are surrounded by these people who are considered the norm.

However, the reality of becoming fluent in all skills of a language -- grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening and writing -- is a long and hard journey and it is most certainly not the norm to be fluently multilingual.
