Time to stop pitting us all against each other
Certain sections of the media seem determined at every opportunity to make unfair comparisons between the public and private sectors and engage in ever-popular public sector bashing.
One myth is that the public sector do not contribute to their pensions. In 2009 public servants paid €3.1bn in pension contributions and just €2.5bn was paid out to public service pensioners.
On top of paying superannuation contributions over a 40-year period in the case of, for example, a teacher wanting to retire on full pension, the retired teacher now pays a hefty public service pension levy on a pension already contributed to.
