Time to say gay people are equal

I'M watching the ongoing debate around civil partnership from halfway around the world, volunteering in Ethiopia – land of illegal homosexuality and a blossoming Catholic Church.

As a gay man, I understand that there is much to be said for the recent civil partnership bill – a smattering of rights we didn't have before, some recognition of our relationships.

But if I can offer some outside perspective on why the battle for full civil marriage still rages on, let it be this: you have to say we're equal.
