Time to review child discipline

ATTEMPTING to ban the smacking of children provokes heated debate about the autonomy of the family and legal recognition of a parent's right to use "reasonable chastisement".
Proponents of smacking children often claim "it never did me any harm" and "we've gone soft" on the disciplining of minors.
Yet we do not countenance providing legal protection for adults using physical force on other adults.
