Time to pull the plug on electric cars

THE dust may have settled on the electronic voting fiasco, but with the electric car it appears our Government is looking for more ways to waste public money.
Environment Minister John Gormley seems to have forgotten (or side-lined) the fact that the bulk of Ireland's electricity comes from gas and oil turbines. Less than 1pc of Ireland's overall energy last year was obtained from wind generation.
Any leaving certificate student will know of Betz's efficiency law -- that the maximum efficiency that can be achieved in any energy conversion process is 59pc. Most turbines in Ireland are between 40pc to 50pc efficient on a good day.
