Time to means test child benefit

Child benefit in the UK for a couple with three children amounts to the equivalent of €234.72 per month, as compared with €487 per month here.
Is it not odd that Ireland, now in particularly deep financial difficulty, is cheerfully handing out more than double the amount of benefits as its neighbours? Whilst those neighbours intend to start means testing these payments, Irish politicians seem hell-bent on ensuring that the State continues to pay out more than it can afford, even with the IMF knocking at the door.
The widespread political reluctance to address this appears to be primarily based on fear of losing any voters rather than doing what is in the national interest, which is hardly the kind of leadership the country needs right now.
