Time to bring education home
Monday October 15 2007
It's the ultimate private school. Yes, it's legal. It's even constitutional. Yes, it's very possible to do even without being a teacher yourself.
Yes, your children will have social skills (actually, whisper it softly, even better social skills than if they were at school, because they'll be mixing with a wide variety of people, not just age-peers and one adult).
No, it's not funded by the State in any way, and it does have the big expense of the opportunity-cost of one whole salary -- that of the stay-at-home parent.
Having said that, I've written novels while home-schooling, and others run businesses, so it doesn't have to be a total loss of income.
And the actual pay-out costs are only as expensive as you make them. A library card and broadband access are truly all you need (although no doubt you'll want, and get, more than that).
The advantages are huge: a more relaxed lifestyle, a closer relationship with your children, an education tailor-made for them rather than the 'one-size-sorta-fits-all' which school has to be, them having interest in learning and being self-motivated. It's fun.
