Time has come to pay for our excess

As an Irish person living abroad for some time, it still shocks me to see how materialistic the nation has become.
Do Irish people realise just how good they have had it for so long? To put some things in perspective, nobody in Germany or The Netherlands earns nearly as much as their equivalents in Ireland are paid.
They also pay far more tax on their earnings. The higher tax rate in the Netherlands, 52pc, cuts in just above €40,000. The reason these countries have good social services, transport systems and money in the bank is simply because they collect more tax per capita, have far lower costs and invest their money based on what they can afford.
