Thugs serve no cause

Sir --I was bemused to hear participants in a radio chat show argue that many of the people involved in the violence and vandalism that has swept some English cities lately had "a legitimate grievance" in that they were concerned about government cutbacks and the less than bright futures facing them.
While I accept that the world economic crisis has devastated many lives, I don't accept that this justifies burning entire businesses run by people who have not in any way contributed to the woes of the arsonists. Or smashing shop windows and looting the contents of the premises. Or burning other people's cars, upon which their livelihoods may depend. Have you noticed that rioters never seem to burn their own cars?
Surely no cause is served by gangs of thugs roaming the streets creating mayhem and terrorising anyone who gets in their way.
