The verdict was 'No' -- accept it

Saturday September 27 2008

Is there no end to the attempt to avoid the voice of the people over Lisbon? Last week, Brian Cowen said it had become obvious the economic downturn and the 'No' vote were linked. No mention as to how the EU could so quickly wreck an economy even if it wanted to do so. I hope we are much brighter than he gives us credit for.

Now we have that old favourite of electoral losers, the CIA excuse. This time, it is Roche and Poettinger who have ventured to say that the US Department of Defence had a hand in the referendum.

Next, it will be witchcraft or voodoo or mass hypnosis which caused the 'No' result.

These guys seem to be intelligent men. So why not accept the voice of the Irish people? 'No' was the result. Which part of 'No' don't they understand? It's not difficult. If other countries in Europe had the chance to vote, the result may have been the same.

Ireland is the only country to have had a vote, and we are one of eight countries where the ratification process has yet to be finalised. Scare-mongering comments that we are out in the cold are very much premature.

Athens burns as politicians vote

The historic vote paves the way for Greece's European partners and the International Monetary Fund to release 170 billion euro in new rescue loans, without which Greece would default on its mountain of debt next month and likely leave the eurozone - a scenario that would further unsettle global markets. Politicians voted 199-74 in favour of the cutbacks, despite strong dissent among the two main coalition members.
