The speeding TV car ads

Saturday November 18 2006

Just when a few weeks have passed without a new car advertisement on television, along comes one which more than makes up for it.

Apparently I am a voice in the wilderness about ads that glorify speeding.

The latest offering from Toyota is surprising. Normally their ads are responsible.

Not so the latest effort.

We see "fancy" high speed driving around town, complete with parallel parking through skidding sideways at speed into a line of parked cars. The moral of the story is that if you speed, it makes you "grown up".

Hardly a week has passed since everyone was up in arms about the South Tipperary Fine Gael TD pointing out the obvious (for country people).

He fell foul of the politically correct brigade by stating reality.

I would prefer to encounter people I know in rural Ireland who have had a few rather than some idiot driving in the manner suggested by these TV ads.

I'd rather encounter some guy who has drunk three pints on a regular basis for the past 20 years and who is 60kph than some fool who is completely sober and doing 120kph believing he is infallible.

There are ads that show cars speeding through carparks, a highly dangerous practise which is on the increase, generally letting rip on the open road, and now high speed stunts in urban areas?

Athens burns as politicians vote

The historic vote paves the way for Greece's European partners and the International Monetary Fund to release 170 billion euro in new rescue loans, without which Greece would default on its mountain of debt next month and likely leave the eurozone - a scenario that would further unsettle global markets. Politicians voted 199-74 in favour of the cutbacks, despite strong dissent among the two main coalition members.
