The many faces of child benefit

IN response to Liam Muldowney (Letters, October 13) regarding my previous letter on child benefit: firstly, I am aware of families that put aside the child benefit as a nest egg for their children. Secondly, I was not saying other less well-off families have children solely to avail of child benefit, but that, for some, having children is a fast track to other social welfare benefits -- housing being one.
I imagine Mr Muldowney would be entitled to some support should child benefit be means tested and I would have no problem with that.
He works hard, continuing to contribute to the State whilst rearing a large family (I have seven siblings, but no children of my own yet!) So I do understand his point of view and the difficult circumstances he is in. Not everybody, though, can wholeheartedly say the same.
