Technology has defeated work
THE opening phrases of 'Morning Ireland' yesterday said it all. Relief in Europe because Ireland would agree to the bailout, pass the Budget and get back to work. Back to work? Not one single commentator has identified the absolute change that technology has wrought in the "job market" and the role that work must play in future society.
Work as we know it is dead, unnecessary for production, and unavailable as a credible method of distributing wealth to the masses. But the delusion continues. We are the luckiest generation that ever lived; we should celebrate. We are well on our way to the workless society or towards oblivion.
Last week the British government announced the intention of having all government services only available online in the near future.
