Sugar fiasco has left a bitter taste

Mary Coughlan was Agriculture Minister when Ireland's only sugar plant closed in 2006.

We were told that it was to drive the price down.

Europe went from being an exporter of sugar to an importer. Sugar now has to be imported, robbing farmers of income and sugar-plant workers of jobs.
