Suffer the little children

Madam – Re the recent revelations of the discovery and the undignified manner of the burial of so many unfortunate children in Tuam, Co Galway: let us look beyond the burials for a moment and ask why the mothers of these children were treated like lepers.
Was it because they happened to be unmarried?
Does God not love us all, whether married or not?
Let us go a step further and come to the present time, where people are campaigning outside Leinster House about the Health Act 1970.
They are asking for all children diagnosed with a serious illness or congenital condition to be allowed a full medical card for the duration of their illness.
One of the people leading this campaign is a member of the Capuchin Order whose nine-year-old niece has leukaemia.
We may be able to do little for those who were ill-treated in the past. Many people in power back then turned a blind eye.
Well, we in the here-and-now should not have to ask but should demand that all seriously ill children be allowed full medical cards.
Let's not wait another 50 years to find another burial ground of those who died of neglect due to poor governance
