Success . . . LE Orla . . . Winners . . . The Dubliners

By Maynooth, Co. Kildare

Thursday August 21 2008

In response to Tarquin Montreau's comments regarding the disappointing performance of the Irish Olympic Team (Letters, August 19), Sebastian Coe has said that the success of the British team is due to the fact that they've realised that success comes at a price. The price of success for Irish sport is the difficult choice of less money for the GAA and more money for everyone else.

AM PRIDDY,

DUN LAOGHAIRE, CO DUBLIN

There's not a great deal that can be done about the annual farce in Dingle where the discredited former Taoiseach Charles Haughey is honoured by the organisers of the town's regatta (Irish Independent, August 18).

It is, however, a slap in the face to all compliant taxpayers that a State ship, the LE Orla, formed an integral part of the ceremonies for this major tax cheat.

ANTHONY SHERIDAN,

COBH, CO CORK

I would be interested to know if anyone, like me, felt that in the 100 metres butterfly swimming final in Beijing Michael Phelps actually finished second. The Serbian swimmer, Cavic, appeared to touch the finishing wall first.

EAMONN O'CONNELL,

LEIXLIP, CO KILDARE

In your obituary for the late Ronnie Drew I did not notice any mention of the fact that The Dubliners started their careers in the Abbey Tavern, Howth as well as O' Donoghue's. Strangely, the London Times mentioned it.

BRIAN P O CINNEIDE

DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA

TDs and senators are employing relatives at the taxpayers' expense (Irish Independent, August 18). This is sickening when one thinks that a taxpayer's son or daughter cannot often get work. This revelation lends credence to the wide-spread belief that public sector jobs are filled before interviews take place.

DR FLORENCE CRAVEN,

MAYNOOTH, CO. KILDARE
