Stub out smoking once and for all
I endorse much of the sentiment expressed by Kevin Myers in his column re Gerry Ryan's cocaine use.
The coming election gives opportunity for reflection and translation into proactive politics and policies. The case against the current list of illicit narcotics is self-evident. No further debate is required. But an ongoing and radical management review of alcohol use and abuse is certainly required.
In the case of tobacco products there is no social, medical, recreational or economic justification for its continued legal status or supply. Seven thousand people die annually and prematurely from its use. This is annually twice the shameful slaughter that took place in the North for more than 30 years. The State is openly complicit in this poisonous slaughter.
