Stop praising the mess-makers

Instead of asking former minister Michael McDowell to account for the decisions he helped to make while in government that contributed to the present state of the country, Sam Smyth praises him as "the PDs' most able strategist" who "was held in extremely high regard" (Irish Independent, July 31).
During the boom, so much of the media coverage of the issues of the day was based on a cosy consensus that our lords and masters knew best. Well, the lords and masters have been proven not to know best.
What we need now is a change from that era. We do not need the return of those lords and masters who caused the mess in the first place.
