St Mel's could do with the money

PERHAPS Teresa Kelly (Letters, May 18) could explain how Bishop O'Reilly's suggestion that children donate some of their Confirmation money towards the restoration of St Mel's Cathedral is an act of manipulation. In my opinion, her attack on the bishop is unwarranted and unreasonable.

As Ms Kelly surely knows, it has been made clear that the bishop's suggestion was merely that -- a suggestion. No child is bound to give any of their money, and a diocesan spokesman stressed that for those children who do wish to contribute, €5 should be the maximum amount that they give.

Those who do give some of their money to help purchase a statue for the restored cathedral will have their names recorded on a plaque at the base of the statue.
