Spotlight on the wrong problem

Uncle Gaybo was heard on the radio in the run-up to Christmas telling us all to take care on the roads over the festive season. He told us to slow down and maybe to purchase a high-visibility jacket for someone as a Christmas present.

As I mounted a footpath in Co Westmeath while driving at 20mph at noon on December 27, I doubt very much that a high-visibility jacket would have saved a pedestrian, had I hit him or her.

What would have saved them was a well-gritted road surface.
