Soldiers fighting for their flag
Niall Ginty (Letters, October 12) criticises Tom Cooper for stating the obvious, that Irish soldiers wear the green uniform and are sworn to serve Ireland. Those who serve any other country in arms may be Irishmen who are soldiers but are not Irish soldiers.
I have served in both the Irish and South African armies -- in a much higher rank than Lt Bury held in the British one, I might add. At no stage did I consider myself other than a South African soldier. This applied to men and women of foreign nationality who so served.
