'Softer' syllabus leads to maths failures

IT seems to me that Leaving Certificate mathematics has been getting progressively easier over the past 20 years, yet the results are getting worse and worse.
And once again, rote learning is getting plenty of stick, amid calls for open-book exams to foster "creativity".
But the basics are not being adequately covered, and if you don't know the basics, then of course the more advanced topics will elude many students.
