Social welfare -- a daily struggle

Sir -- Alison O'Riordan's article (Sunday Independent, July 25, 2010) was quite insulting towards the thousands of hard- working people who find themselves trying to get by on social welfare payments.

It's easy to live for one week on €196, it's when it extends beyond this that the problems raise their ugly heads.

Can you explain to your readers how we stretch this €196 to cover mortgage, electricity, gas, phone bill, life insurance, health insurance (a thing of the past), groceries, the morning newspaper and other day-to-day items.
