Smoking gun over Martin’s ‘success’

IT is no surprise that Micheal Martin’s elevation to the leadership of Fianna Fail has had a positive effect on that party’s fortunes in the polls. He’s young, personable, intelligent and, comparatively speaking, he’s sincere.
However, after 13 years in government, his single biggest achievement, as cited by the chattering classes, is the smoking ban.
Over 1,000 bars have closed as a result of the ban and the number of people smoking has risen to 31pc of the population, according to Dr Fenton Howell of ASH, and one million people, ordinary decent citizens, find themselves ostracised for purchasing and consuming a legal product that provides €1.5bn to the Exchequer.
