Slate slate show

• I am almost afraid to ask, but was anyone else left feeling a little nauseous by the saccharine display of bonhomie on the 50th anniversary of 'The Late Late Show'?

Credit where credit is due: five decades of quality broadcasting is worth celebrating, and Pat Kenny, Gay Byrne and Ryan Tubridy all have excelled . . . up to a point. The host should be almost invisible; the guest should be the star.

The sweetness of celebrity can be a little sickening sometimes, especially when it is all-pervasive and not confined to those who have actually distinguished themselves through accomplishment, rather than merely talking about it.
