Silence is unforgivable

Sir -- It is fair to say that when it comes to child abuse, deceit, cover-ups, denial and protection of paedophiles, the church here passed the Rubicon many years ago. No religious organisation that ever existed has done more to sully its own reputation than the Catholic faith. Arrogant and self-righteous, the dog-collared untouchables still purvey the swagger of purity and innocence even when the truth offers a completely different perspective.

If Cardinal Sean Brady did step down, that would possibly be the end of the matter and the furore would eventually dissolve into the usual clerical obscurity. However by staying on in his position he is adding fuel to the fire that is raging in people's hearts and minds about his appalling and unforgivable act of deliberate silence. A silence which contributed to the sickening abuse of many other innocent children.
