Shame on you, Brian Lenihan
Thursday October 16 2008
In reference to Brian Lenihan's quote: "It is no less than a call to patriotic action and it is my honour to propose this Budget 2009," I'd just like to say that I, along with quite a few people on our island, am finding it quite hard to feel patriotic.
The reason for this is simple. It is extremely difficult to be patriotic or proud of our country at the moment when, after 15 years of economic success, the Fianna Fail Government has led us into this mess through wastefulness and obsession with special interest and the construction sector.
Mr Ahern should hang his head in shame, as back in May he jumped ship while it was sinking, grabbed the oars for the only lifeboat and sailed into the sunset -- leaving Mr Cowen and the other deckhands to try and plug the holes.
But instead of plugging the holes, Mr Cowen has left the ship to sink and, through his First Mate Lenihan's Budget, has made sure we sink to the bottom.
Consumer spending next year will fall through the floor because everywhere we turn we will be taxed -- in our wage packet, at the pumps, at the car park, at the airport.
God forbid any of us has to go to A&E because we will have to fork out €100 for the privilege, and pray to God we don't catch some other sorry dose while we are in there.
If it is your honour, Mr Lenihan, to give us this Budget, then all I can say is the only way is up for you from here because you have made sure we will remain at the bottom of the abyss for the next five years.
Shame on you and shame on all of your colleagues.
