Shame on Tanaiste for unequal pay cuts

LOW-paid civil servants and young people who have suffered a substantial cut in income have every right to feel outraged that senior civil servants on €150,000 a year arranged their own reduction of 3pc.
Tanaiste Mary Coughlan's response in the Dail was that the review body said their bonus had become part of their pay and, hence, loss of their bonus is their contribution.
What Mary Coughlan omitted to say very conveniently was that, when the bonus was introduced, the review body clearly said that it was for exceptional performance only and that it should not be a general type of payment.
