Shackleton gets his due annually

Sir -- Eddie Naughton in his recent article on the Tom Crean documentary made several references to that other great Irish-born polar explorer, Ernest Shackleton.

Athy Heritage Centre has the only permanent exhibition anywhere in the world devoted to Shackleton, who was born a few miles outside of Athy.

Athy will host the 11th annual Autumn School over the October Bank Holiday weekend. Details of this year's school will be available on the school's website shortly -- www.shackletonmuseum.com. Again, as in previous years, we will welcome visitors from abroad, including several from North America. This annual event has proved to be the most important and enjoyable gathering of polar experts anywhere in the world. We are particularly proud to have as our guest each year Shackleton's granddaughter Alexandra Shackleton.
