Selling forests is a short-sighted idea

The State may be considering the disposal of some state and semi-state assets. Among the items for inclusion in the Government's programme is the sale of our forests.

At present, Coillte is responsible for the management of our forests. The forest land bank was built up over the years at a modest rate of some 4,000 acres per annum up to the late 1940s. It was then increased to 20,000 acres annually.

We have now reached the stage where large tracts of forests have reached maturity and are being harvested, yielding a reasonable financial return.
