HUGH FARRELLY sums it up nicely ('Rugby can't survive €12m mauling from free-TV plan', Irish Independent, May 19). Even those who wouldn't know a rugby ball from a spaceship can understand that the IRFU has much heavier financial commitments since the days of the amateur game.
Without the €12m input from television rights, our professionals would not be in a position to serve up such high-quality rugby.
This is the reality of life in the professional era. It is also the reason for the massive increase in the game's popularity.
