Rugby and Aras
•I compare the presidency with the All Blacks rugby team. The All Blacks are mediocre at the Haka but excellent at playing rugby. Applying this metaphor to the presidency: rugby is defending the role of the Constitution and human rights; the Haka is the public relations role.
All our presidential candidates are the opposite of the All Blacks -- they are good at the Haka but useless at playing rugby. The Constitution should protect the sovereignty of the Irish people and have an efficient Dail in debates and governance. Both are moribund.
The presidential candidates should be asked questions on articles of the Constitution and how they are going to help in making the Dail efficient. The public relations role is needless duplication with the Department of Foreign Affairs.
