RTE's misplaced priorities

Madam --Minister for Communications, Pat Rabbitte, in response to concerns expressed in the Dail at RTE's decision to close its London office -- which costs in the region of €800,000 a year to run -- said RTE's financial crisis, with a deficit of €50m, is the only reason for the closure. Minister Rabbitte further said the "regrettable decision" to close the London bureau was not taken lightly.

Not alone is London one of the major cities of the financial and commercial world and home to a huge and ever-increasing Irish population, it is also the capital city of our largest trading partner. Is there not something perverse about RTE's priorities when the salary it pays to just one radio/TV presenter is almost equivalent to the entire cost of maintaining the London bureau?
