Royals trapped in world of celebrity
I notice from many recent letters to the press that we are all expected to provide a warm, welcome to Queen Elizabeth. From the perspective of an Irishman living in England, the whole business of her visit is seething with ambiguity. The notion of the queen as a symbol of all that is good and decent has been tarnished by the cavalier behaviour of her very dysfunctional family.
It is no longer clear what function the royal family is intended to serve.
The royals are all trapped in the world of celebrity that is characterised by exaggerated personal significance and extravagant lifestyles.
