Road tax system is unfair and expensive
Labour TD Robert Dowds says "if everyone paid a fair amount of road tax" (Irish Independent, June 6) the cost of this €1bn tax might fall.
I bought a new hybrid SUV in 2007 and have paid €1560 a year in road tax. My neighbour bought an identical vehicle in 2009 and his road tax is €156. Ten times cheaper than mine. Where is the fairness in that? The reason one in 10 cars have no road tax is simply because it's so expensive, we don't exactly drive on snooker tables either. An across-the-board price for all cars should apply. Wasn't this mooted by Taoiseach Enda Kenny during the election campaign?
