Remedy needed for litter curse

Sir -- Congratulations to Cathal MacCarthy on highlighting the disgraceful state of rural Ireland with regard to the rubbishing of the countryside and the lamentable failure of government to even begin to tackle this.

It's a national disgrace, the countryside, particularly roadside hedges and margins are festooned in litter and it's just getting worse year by year. We call ourselves a modern developed country.

I've yet to see another that treats its countryside with such contempt. What must the lesser-spotted tourist think to be assailed by such filth?
