Race for the Aras

•Some months back I was putting a newspaper cutting into a little scrapbook I keep when my 22-year-old son asked me why was I putting this particular piece in. I showed it to him and read out the parts that struck me most.

The article related to the murder by 'republicans' of a young man, Ronan Kerr, in April of this year. The article, however, concentrated on Kate Carroll's reaction to Ronan's murder. Her husband, Stephen, had also been murdered by 'republicans', in March 2009.

She said: "It doesn't take a hero or a man to stand behind a wall or plant a bomb underneath a car. It is despicable." Her next words however, cut through me even more. She went on to describe her husband's loss to her.
