Pupil discipline is elephant in classroom

Education Minister Ruairi Quinn says he is about to focus attention on school enrolment policies.

A more fundamental reform is badly needed, if education is to be the powerhouse of our economy.

The biggest problem of all -- the elephant in the classroom -- is the serious breakdown of discipline in many of our schools. From that point of view, I cannot blame any school for trying to closely monitor its intake, as once they are accepted as pupils it is extremely difficult to expel them.
