Publicans have only themselves to blame
John Mallon blames the smoking ban for the closure of Irish pubs (Letters, March 31).
What about the longstanding practice of charging, say, €4 a pint, but €2.25 a glass? People are sick of being ripped off. If you fancy a glass of wine, you have to pay €3.50 to €4.50 for a small bottle. In the UK, many pubs have wine on draught, or pour it from a large bottle, obviously at a lot less cost.
Why do most pubs black out their windows? What have they got to hide? Would it not be better to make them bright and welcoming?
