Public workers paying for deficit

In December 2009, the Government announced its aim to reduce the Budget deficit by €4bn during the coming year.
This reduction was to be implemented in the main by cuts in public sector wages and a reduction in social welfare. For Liam Nicholas (Letters, September 2) to suggest otherwise is simply incorrect.
Mr Nicholas also seems to have a hazy idea of benchmarking. The "benchmarking mark two" exercise that he suggests has already taken place and was reported in 2007. It awarded public service workers no increase whatsoever as "a discount of 12pc was applied for pension entitlements".
