Public pay hike? That's a joke

I HAVE to admit that I haven't stopped laughing since reading Ailish O'Hora's report under the headline, 'Public service workers enjoy pay hike' (Irish Independent, April 23).

As a public service worker whose take home pay has decreased by almost 20pc in the last 15 months, I found the black humour of this grossly misleading headline almost overwhelming. I had to check that it wasn't April 1.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, public service workers have had to take a public service levy averaging 7.5pc, a pay cut of 6.5pc and an income levy of 2pc.
