Public patients suffer once again

In your report (Irish Independent, September 28) on the proposals to cut health services in the HSE-West region, director of operations John Hennessy finally admitted that the cutbacks will indeed impact on services.
In an effort to play down the horrendous consequences that this will have for some patients, he suggested that the National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF) will be available to offer treatments for those on waiting lists. This is standing logic and reason on its head.
With the additional NTPF layer of bureaucracy, coupled with having to fund the profit element, the costs to the taxpayer are greatly increased.
