Proud of our President

Sir -- There are a lot of people questioning whether Ireland needs a President. Anyone thinking that way must be extremely blinkered following the 14 years we have just had with President McAleese. She has been nothing less than brilliant in how she has carried out her duties.
There is no part of Irish life that she has not touched on. People and groups who have worked on a totally voluntary basis to help their fellow citizens have been recognised by our first citizen and applauded for the terrific, previously unheralded, work they have done. Minority groups like Travellers, gay rights advocates, organisations for the disabled, etc, have at last been recognised as equal citizens of our country. Words cannot adequately say what this has meant to all of them to be recognised by you.
How can we not be proud of our President when she goes abroad representing us? This is a lady who says all that is good about our country with her personality, her kindness, her wit, her compassion. Remember her interview in the grounds of Aras an Uachtarain after the tragedy of 9/11, her performance with the Queen, and her recognition of the success of our citizens over the last 14 years.
