Sir - It was truly dismaying reading Terry Healy's letter 'Hike of €5 is an insult to pensioners' (Sunday Independent August 14).

It is the same old story of pensioners putting themselves first; they worked all their lives so the taxpayer should prioritise funding their old age. If they worked so long, they should have funded a private pension to do just that, it is not for others to pay for it. The Government's priority in the coming budget should be to those most in need - like the children waiting years for basic mental health and multidisciplinary support services or in other cases operations to improve their lives.

There are households all over the country with horrific stories to tell of children awaiting services. Most we never hear of. On top of this, pensioners don't generally have mortgages and childcare costs to pay for on top of everything else. But, of course, because they are great for voting, the Government will be sure to look after them come October's budget.
