Presidency: the gift that keeps on giving
•It is simply astounding that a person in any public office, be they the president or anyone else, should be allowed to keep any item given to them in carrying out an official task for which they are already handsomely paid by the taxpayer, never mind being allowed keep any gift valued under €650 -- a limit the president may or may not sign up to.
As things stand, the president is entitled to keep gifts of any value given to them in office. Mary McAleese has handed to the State €100,000 of gifts given to her during her time in Aras an Uachtarain.
The limit below which an official of the Irish State, no matter who they are, can accept a gift should be set at zero.
