• While Maeve Dineen has every right to voice her cynicism with calls for greater investment in energy (Irish Independent, July 9), I feel compelled to address the gross complacency that permeates her argument and that generally made against new energy investment.
The bottom line is that sustainable energy is all about the bottom line! The Irish Independent is well aware of this, as elsewhere in the same edition Aideen Sheehan outlines how households can save €350 annually through energy-saving measures. Ms Dineen and others in the anti camp give the impression that sustainable energy is some Celtic Tiger-era luxury that needs to be forsakened in these straitened times, when, in reality, the polar opposite is the case.
Energy is required for absolutely every natural and human-made process on earth, from turning on lights to dividing cells; and the world relies on fossil fuels for 80pc of these needs.
