Pope has a right to free comment

IF JACQUELINE Cotter (‘Pope has no right preaching to UK’, Letters, February 3), had not let her anti-Church bias cloud her intelligence, she would have recognised that the UK equality bill would empower politicians to dictate to the Church on how it should conduct its affairs.
If she accepted the right of everybody to free speech, she would acknowledge the right of the leader of the Church to comment on something which would have such an effect.
Jacqueline suggests that the Pope should go away “and leave the rest of us alone”.
