•I'm finding my trip into the capital more upsetting of late, so much so that I'm contemplating not doing so anymore. The many people begging on our streets truly upset me, especially young mothers and their babies.
Recently I encountered a young mother and her baby sitting at the corner of a shop on Nassau Street. As I approached them she quietly asked if I could please spare some change.
This was about 9.30am on a cold November morning. Her baby was no more than a few months old and his/her face still haunts me. Some of the words from the 'Live Aid' song came to mind: "Thank God it's them instead of me." Not that I'm wishing this situation on any human being. We must look at and seriously tackle this situation, where a mother and child has no other option than to beg on the street for survival.
